NEWS: One less thing for DS Fanboys...

PSP's Battery Upgrades yet again - 3800mAh
Seems as if the PSP is now perfect.
Well nearly anyway.
Remember the last time I posted about the 1800mAh battery saying how much of a big step it was to having better overall preformance?
Well another one has popped up since, a 3800mAh external battery which is available on Lik-Sang now for a mere $25.

Thats right, allowing the PSP to run three times more then normal once fully charged.
Seems like Nintendo Fans have one less thing to whine to Sony about.
:-)
The PSP Battery is now the equivalent to that of the DS if not more.
So whats Next Fanboys?

Personality for your PSP
05.29.05 (10:14 am) [edit]
Personality for your PSP
It seems that customization was a big issue with focus groups for the next gen console systems since the Xbox360 and the new Gameboy Micro will feature interchangeable faceplates. I for one, think it's a great idea to be able to choose the color of my console to match my other components or give them a little personality, which brings me to the topic of this review. I ran into a little site called decalgirl.com that deals in high quality, full color vinyl skins for all the major consoles and iPods. I was leery at the prospect of applying anything adhesive to the beautiful finish of my precious PSP so I did a little research to find out more about this curious product that promised to bring personality to my portable.
The first thing I did was come up with a few criteria that would make or break the deal for me. Here they are:
1. non-permanent: People change, so I wanted a skin that would change as well.
2. re-positionable: the most annoying thing about adhesive products is the possibility of screwing it up and wasting your money.
3. sticky residue: no thanks.
With those criteria in hand, I went decalgirl.com to see what they had to offer. The first thing I did notice was that they had a wide selection of designs, both solid color and printed full-color patterns. I picked out and ordered a skin I liked. In this case, a design called 'Aloha' would soon find itself gracing the face of my PSP.
A few days later:
After waiting patiently for my order, the doorbell rang and I was in business. As I prepped my PSP for its new face, I felt a tinge of uncertainty and a bit of nervousness. The risk of ruining the face of my $349 system crossed my mind a few times as I removed the vinyl skin from its reusable backing sheet. I did notice right away that the quality of the vinyl was top notch. I tested a scrap of the excess skin on my PSP to see how it would react and found that the adhesive is very forgiving. I applied and removed it several times to check for 'goo' but found none. Lining up the skin was easy, basically starting from the middle and working your way to the edges. I did make a couple mistakes, but easily corrected them by peeling back and re-applying. The vinyl is very elastic and durable. In fact, according to the directions, they suggest you keep the backing sheet should you decide to put it back!

In a few minutes, I had successfully applied the skin and my PSP was ready for the luau. The skin looks great when applied and has a glossy finish. The non-permanent feature of this product make it the perfect way to protect the finish of the PSP's face while giving it a custom appearance. They are also inexpensive and have literally dozens of designs to choose from. So until you can get your hands on one of these PSPs, check out decalgirl.com and find your personality today.

First Impressions from E3
05.19.05 (8:22 am) [edit]
First Impressions from E3
If you’ve been following the big pre-show press conferences from the 3 big boys of the gaming industry at E3 2005, you have an idea of what goodies are in store for lucky gamers this holiday season. Let me first say that the coverage of this year’s E3 is fantastic. With the Internet coverage and the live television coverage from G4, it’s almost as good as actually being there, although free swag would be nice. So what’s getting your heart racing now that you’ve seen Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo’s vision of the future? Here is my first impression of the ‘next-gen’ of gaming.
The Xbox360
Although Frodo’s sneak preview of the new hardware on MTV last week created a lot of hype, Microsoft’s initial showing at E3 was a little less than what I expected. The Xbox360 is a promising system that is impressive by spec, but I have mixed signals as to what direction Microsoft wants to take console gaming. Is it an EBay console or a gaming system? Seriously though, I had the feeling that the hoodie-wearing team at Microsoft were sipping their lattes at one too many focus groups when they dreamed up the vision that the new Xbox Live community would be one big marketplace and, oh yeah, there would be gaming too. As for the demos, there was really nothing that made me too excited except for maybe Gears of War and Ghost Recon. I did manage to swallow the small amount of vomit that came up from seeing the obvious ‘planted’ audience members doing their “X” symbols. It was a new low for them as far as I’m concerned taking tips from Ron Popeil’s infamous infomercials. On a positive note I like the compact design and the whole concave free form shape of the hardware itself. It’s definitely a jump from the giant, black slab in my living room now. The controllers are also nice, compact and I like the idea of the logo-button. Yet, I really believe that the lack of tech demos and the premature reveal really was the shot in the foot for them, but hey, at least it was better than what Nintendo had to say.
The Big ‘N’
What’s there to say about Nintendo’s vision except it’s still a mystery to me. The black box they unveiled was an appropriate metaphor of the blank I have in my head after watching that presentation. Yes, backwards compatibility is a great idea and It’s good to see that Nintendo has acknowledged that there is an Internet, but what the hell are they thinking? Nintendo is lagging behind with their current offering and in addition to the fact that there was nothing to show on the Revolution in terms of demos as well as no controllers, I’m really starting to worry if this is the beginning of the end.
Nintendo did reveal a few bits about the Revolution, the most noteworthy was the online service that would be comparable to Xbox Live with the ability to be able to download the entire NES, SNES and N64 game catalog… neat, but is it revolutionary? Nintendo is really banking on the nostalgia angle and this move really shows that. Kevin Pereira of G4Techtv’s ‘Attack of the Show’ said it best by saying that “Mario is a whore.” I wholeheartedly agree. How many genres can you handle seeing Mario again? Honestly, Nintendo…perhaps a Mario FPS wouldn’t be a bad idea. Then at least I can have the satisfaction of seeing you explode at the business end of my rocket launcher.
Speaking of regurgitating the past, they also revealed the newer and tinier Game Boy Advance that they like to call the Game Boy Micro. This 2 by 4-inch wonder features a brighter screen then its predecessor, but whoa, that’s tiny. Boasting interchangeable faceplates for customization, its clear that the Game Boy Micro is more of a fashion accessory than anything else. I mean honestly, would you play GBA games on a screen that’s almost the size of a cell phone screen? I love the SP, but I’ll pass on the Micro.
What will happen when the nostalgic appeal grows old and gamers actually want something fresh? Why can’t Nintendo deliver consistent satisfaction for the adult gamers instead of losing that business to Sony and Microsoft? Yeah, the new Zelda is impressive but please, come up with something new. Next!
The Playstation 3
When I saw this presentation, I had a good feeling. I’ll admit that PS2 lost me for awhile to Xbox’s hardware superiority, but recently I have been coming back, mostly due to the recent batch of great games like Final Fantasy XI, Burnout 3, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Shadow of Rome and the latest GTA. First thing’s first, the CELL processor’s capabilities were richly demonstrated in demos that simply blew me away. I was especially impressed by the vortex demo with the blowing leaves that clearly showed off the hardware’s ‘supercomputer-like’ properties. As ‘Father of the Playstation’, Ken Kutaragi explained in his presentation, the format of the PS3 will use Blu-ray technology, a smart step in my opinion seeing that the demands for more and more data will be inevitable, using hardware that is touted of being ‘dozens of times’ more powerful than the PS2. Like all the systems in this year’s E3, backwards compatibility is the norm for the entire catalog of PS and PS2 titles.
Let’s go back to the demos. Wow, is all I want to say and I can say I speak for the gamers when I ask the question: “Was that pre-rendered or real time?” The demos for Killzone 2, Motorstorm and Killing Day were the ones that really grabbed me. Right now, its too early to tell if that’s what we’ll be playing in 2006, but if the whole point of the demo is to serve as inspiration for developers…well I hope that inspired you all. The sheer power of the PS3 is leaving little in terms of obstacles for the developers and I think that gamers are going to have the time of their lives.
The console itself is a work of art, resembling an office building in Singapore and like its predecessor; it has the option of laying flat. Of course, a next-gen console is nothing without the ability to go online and the PS3 is ready, boasting a built-in Ethernet adaptor and 802.11b/g wireless adaptor (Xbox360’s wireless adaptor will cost extra). Speaking of wireless, PS3 features Bluetooth technology, capable of supporting up to 7 of those sleek, boomerang controllers. Display-wise, Sony has included full HDTV support with the added feature of being able to hook up 2 displays at once.
The thing I liked about Sony’s presentation was that it didn’t disappoint or try to create unnecessary hype. The excitement I felt was justified by the solid examples that were presented, not by celebrity endorsement or sneak previews, my precious. They came to show the next Playstation and what it was capable of, which was exactly what they did. The demos were mindblowing, and it was made clear that Sony was here to create the future…again. All this while I’m still in euphoria from my PSP too. Great job Sony.
Final words
I am no means a fan-boy of any of these companies, but rather a gamer first and a consumer second. I expect that I will be paying lots of my hard-earned money on at least 2 of the 3 next-generation gaming consoles sooner or later. I can assure you now that I won’t be getting a Nintendo this time around, yet I was considering picking up a Gamecube now that they’re dirt-cheap. I am just getting more and more disappointed by the product that Nintendo keeps shoveling out. It’s tired and lacks the revolution of its namesake. As a gamer, I’m not interested in seeing another Mario, Pokemon or Link, thank you. If the younger gamers are eating it up and mom and dad approve, go for it, Nintendo…go hard.
The next year will be big for the consoles and I for one will look forward to what’s in store. Xbox360 looks cool, yet there was not much to see this early in the game. I don’t, however, like the feeling of being patronized by Microsoft when it comes to seeing us as dollar figures instead of the gamers that we are, looking for a great experience when we turn on a console. Sony came out to show us that there are amazing things in the future and that they were the ones to bring it. They did that when they made PSP and I am convinced that PS3 will do the same.
But, hey, the show has officially begun so let’s enjoy and see what else is in store.

Video for your PSP
05.14.05 (10:57 am) [edit]
Video for your PSP
If you're like me and you just don't see the sense in buying movies on UMD, unless they're cheap, here's a few links to some free content for your PSP. The content below are mostly bite-sized files for when you're on your thumb break from Lumines or for an alternative to watching your socks tumble in the dryer. Lastly, I want to share with you a product that will make PSP video conversion simple.
heavy.com : Sony's first content partner. There are nice video packs available here for download.
atomfilms.com : This famous film site now offers video for the PSP. I recommend "Rockfish".
Gamespot.com : Gamespot now has reviews, hands-on and gameplay footage for PSP.
29hdnetwork.com : Mostly movie trailers and music videos.
psp.connect.com : Sony's own site with a few cool clips and such.
Personally, I like Heavy.com's content the best right now. I don't see the point of having movie trailers or promo clips on my portable. If you want to take your favorite movies or tv shows with you, I suggest you invest in a 512MB or 1GB memory stick duo and convert your own content. PSPvideo9.com is a great app that makes this easy.

You say you want it even easier and more convenient? How about the VRX02 Direct Recorder by Rockridge Sound from Lik-sang.com. It features the convenience of plugging directly into your TV or DVD player and even better, it writes directly to the memory stick. The only catch with the VRX02 is that you have to wait til July, 05. It would have been cool if the PSP could record it's own files from a video source, but I'm not complaining. So far, I love my PSP.
Until next time.

NEWS: Xbox 360 Pics
05.08.05 (5:56 am) [edit]

This is a real shot of Microsoft's new Xbox360 that someone took on their cameraphone at Microsoft’s Xbox360 Revealed launch party in Los Angeles last night. You can read the full story on Engadget.com. What are your opinions of Microsoft's latest gaming hardware? Personally, I find the design nice compared to the huge, black, malfunctioning block I have at home right now. I think that Microsoft intentionally made the dvd drives crap out at the right time for replacing the unit for one of these white beauties.
I've been so busy with the PSP that I lost track of all the Xbox hype lately. Since the UMD security was broken and the first "Hello World" greeted geeks all over the forums, ISO's for a number of games have started to appear on the net, but at this point are not playable. On the upcoming releases front, 'Burnout Legends' is making its way to PSP for racing/crashing fans everywhere with new game modes, including Pursuit Rage. I like racing games, but I love crashing even more. This is the perfect title for the marathon mutiplayer or the quick 'waiting for underwear in the dryer' player.
Meanwhile, the game I'm waiting for, GTA is still in the works. At this point in time, new voice recording is being done for the franchise's famous radio stations. At the same time, the forums are abuzz with the latest fake screens from this upcoming hit. According to Rockstar, GTA for the PSP will be as feature-packed as its PS2 cousin. Other than that, there's not much else they're telling the gaming community regarding this huge PSP release.
Speaking of huge PSP's, check out this billboard in Soho

UMD's Hacked
05.06.05 (2:40 pm) [edit]
Yes,
Its finally happened, the thing that Sony claimed was not possible.
The UMD has been hacked according to sources.
A group that call themselves the "Paradogs" have cracked the PSP system, well their half way there anyway.
They have suceeded in being able to pull files such as movies/games etc from the disc itself on pc, The next step to pirate PSP games would be to burn them onto another blank UMD..
But seeming as Sony do not sell Blank UMD's it looks to me as if games would have to either run off a Memory Stick or unlikly a type of Media very similar to that of a UMD.
It didnt take long now did it?
:-/
More news on the hacking group soon.
